How to Choose the Right Mattress in Eugene, OR

September 21, 2015

At Rileys Real Wood Furniture we understand that purchasing a mattress is a big decision. Especially if there’s two people to think about. That’s why we’ve put together some tips for making the big purchase. Remember, all of our bedroom furniture is made of quality wood and the majority are crafted and designed right here in Oregon!

Replace your mattress every 7-10 years.

Studies show that newer mattresses can improve your sleep quality. If you’ve had the same mattress for over 7 years, we recommend getting a new one. When disposing of your old mattress, we recommend donating it to St. Vincent De Paul’s. Their mattress recycling program keeps millions of pounds of material out of landfills per year.

Figure out your comfort zone.

This comes down to personal preference. No matter how much advice we give the ultimate decision is up to you. Do you like a soft or firm mattress? Perhaps somewhere in-between? If you’re not sure what kind of mattress you like, don’t worry! The best part of mattress shopping is trying all different shapes, styles, and sizes. See below for our next tip; try it before you buy it!

Try it before you buy it!

Probably the number one rule to choosing a mattress is to test it out! On your big shopping day we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes that are easy to slip off. When “testing” out a mattress slip off your shoes and lay in your normal sleeping position. Give it at least 5 minutes before moving on.

Buy new.

Almost every “items you should never buy used” list contains mattresses. And for good reason. A lot of times used mattresses are worn or sloped from years of use. If not cleaned properly, used mattresses can also contain allergens (or bedbugs!), which we’ll get to later on.  For the best sleep possible, we recommend buying a new mattress. As we said before, newer mattresses have proved to yield a better night’s rest. So, try to avoid used or outdated mattresses, and buy a new one!

Beware of allergens and toxins.

Some mattresses are made of synthetic fibers or foam that can contain irritating material for sensitive skin. If you have allergies, be sure to check the label of a mattress before purchasing it. If you have really sensitive skin we recommend getting a hypoallergenic mattress or cover. At Rileys Real Wood, you won’t have to worry about any sneaky allergens or toxins. Our Magniflex mattresses are free of all harmful toxins that are found in other mattresses. Another reason to buy your next mattress from us!
