The Surprising Health Benefits of Buying a New Mattress
January 11, 2017
A good night’s sleep is the best way to start your day. For some people, this is easier said than done. If you are using an old mattress, it can really hinder your ability to start your days feeling refreshed and energized. Mattresses are only supposed to last 7 to 8 years, and old mattresses can affect you in ways you probably wouldn’t expect. At Riley’s Real Wood Furniture of Eugene, Oregon, we understand the value of a good night’s sleep and want to share with you some of the surprising benefits of a new mattress.
Tossing and turning is normally the result of sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress that has painful stress points that keep you from being able to sleep in any one position for very long. This is problematic for many reasons. First, it keeps you from sleeping straight through the night and being as well rested as you could be in the morning. This, in turn, affects other parts of your life and body that you might not realize. If your old, uncomfortable mattress is causing you to be sleep deprived, switching to a new one will help in ways you might not expect.
Mattresses are havens for dust mites. We spend about one third of our lives sleeping, and that leads to the accumulation of dead skin cells on mattresses which dust mites love to feed on. Most people won’t notice the presence of these critters, but those with certain allergies will.
These dust mites can cause excessive sneezing, runny noses, itchiness, watery eyes, coughing and sinus pressure. People suffering from asthma may also find their symptoms exacerbated by the presence of dust mites in their old mattress.
To limit the effects of dust mites, make sure to use allergen-proof bed covers and frequently wash your bedding in hot water.
Surprisingly, a new mattress may actually help you to feel less stressed out during the day. In a 2009 study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, researchers studied the effects on people after replacing their old mattress with a new one. The study found that “the significant increase in sleep quality and pain reduction was paralleled by a significant decrease in stress.”
Bolster Your Immune System
Little or poor quality sleep has a very damaging effect on your immune system. While sleeping, your immune system makes new antibodies and cells to combat against illnesses and infections. If your immune system is habitually denied the time necessary to perform these actions due to a lack of sleep, your body will become more susceptible to diseases and illnesses.
Help with Weight Loss
Sleep deprivation is actually one of the risk factors associated with obesity. A lack of sleep causes your body to produce lower levels of leptin, a hormone which signals to your brain that you have eaten enough, and higher levels of ghrelin, a biochemical which stimulates your appetite.
